Arctic mercury cycling

چکیده

Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions have driven marked increases in Arctic Hg levels, which are now being impacted by regional warming, with uncertain ecological consequences. This Review presents a comprehensive assessment of the present-day total mass balance Arctic. Over 98% atmospheric is emitted outside region and transported to via long-range air ocean transport. Around two thirds this deposited terrestrial ecosystems, where it predominantly accumulates soils vegetation uptake. Rivers coastal erosion transfer about 80 Mg year−1 Ocean, approximate modelled net deposition region. The revised Ocean suggests that burial inner-shelf sediments underestimated (up >100%), needing seasonal observations sediment-ocean exchange. Terrestrial mobilization pathways from cryosphere (permafrost, ice, snow glaciers) remain uncertain. Improved soil, snowpack glacial inventories, mechanisms riverine releases under accelerated glacier soil thaw, coupled atmosphere–terrestrial modelling monitoring sensitive ecosystems such as fjords can help anticipate impacts on downstream ecosystems. Mercury anthropogenic activities budget for Arctic, describing fluxes cycling.

Sources of Mercury in the Arctic

Global and regional emission inventories of mercury are reviewed with special emphasis on the source regions with potential impact on the Arctic environment. These sources are located mostly in Eurasia and North America and emit almost 1300 t of rig to the air annually. Combustion of fossil fuels to produce electricity and heat is the major source of rig. Major portion of the element emissions ...
